The need for inclusivity in fashion will always fall on deaf ears if not approached with practicality. Having spent the entirety of her career in fashion as an editor, award-winning journalist and consultant, Constance White knows how inclusivity can be more than just a concept.

“High fashion has become more embracing of black talent both as designers, models, editors, photographers, stylists and in retail,” White told Teen Vogue.

“Nevertheless, there’s a lot of room for the industry to offer a more equal landscape to people of color in the business. Often there are still different standards applied to black people versus white people in the business. More inclusiveness now in management and in imagery will help encourage young people of color to see themselves in this wonderful business.”

Leading by example is what Elle magazine’s first and only black executive fashion editor hopes more companies will do. And her new book, How to Slay hopes to shed light on the beauty and brilliance black Americans have brought to the evolving industry of fashion.

“There are a lot of people, black people, who have been overlooked by the history books. I wanted to make a beautiful book about the contributions of African American style to fashion and how we dress,” the former Essence Editor-in-Chief said.

“I see How To Slay as playing a part. More inclusiveness now in management in imagery will help encourage young people of color to see themselves in this wonderful business.”

So aside from the usual advice of staying in school and getting an internship, what can Millennials do to get in the door and a seat at the table?

To be honest, White believes it’s up to people like her.

“We who have careers — all of us of any color — have to be intentional about getting everyone the opportunity to get through the door if they so desire. And working hard, getting prepared with the right education — that’s a given. We have to intentionally, say and act to bring all people in.”
